The Free Energy Market has been gaining more and more space in the Brazilian electricity sector.
In February, 68% of generation from alternative renewable sources — such as solar, wind, biomass and PCHs (small hydroelectric plants) — was allocated to the free contracting environment, ing an increase of 31% in 12 months.
According to ABRACEEL (Brazilian Association of Energy Traders), centralized solar energy had 86% of its production traded on the free market in February, reaching a historic level.
Other renewable sources also had a strong presence: biomass with 96%, wind with 63% and PCHs with 57%.
Another relevant milestone was energy consumption in the free environment, which reached 32.165 MW on average for the first time in February, representing a growth of 15% in 12 months. With this performance, the free market now s for 40% of all energy consumed in the country.
This growth is associated with the intensification of migrations to the free environment. In the last 12 months, 27.905 new units began operating in this model, an increase of 67%. At the end of February, the total number of consumer units reached 69.861.
The retail segment — made up mostly of smaller companies — also stood out. In February, there were already 27.391 units in this category, which represents a significant jump of 407% compared to the same month of the previous year.
According to ANEEL (National Electric Energy Agency), more than 16 thousand units have already started the procedures to migrate to the free market throughout 2025, reinforcing the trend of expansion and democratization of access to this contracting model.
